EasyChair submission system

Topics

ALIFE 2023 will showcase a wide range of topics in Artificial Life, bringing together world-leading researchers to discuss the latest advances in the synthesis and simulation of living systems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following aspects of Artificial Life:

  • Complex dynamical systems and networks
  • Artificial chemistry, origins of life, computational biology
  • Synthetic biology, protocells and wet artificial life
  • Ecology and evolution
  • Bio-inspired, cognitive and evolutionary robotics, swarms
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • Perception, cognition, behavior
  • Social systems, artificial and alternative societies
  • Evolution of language, computational linguistics
  • Philosophy of mind, philosophy of science
  • Artificial-life-based art
  • Artificial Life in education

Submission format

There are two options for submission: either full paper or extended abstract. Note that the format is exactly the same for both options. The difference resides in the number of pages and type of contents:

  • Full papers have an 8-page maximum length (not including references) and should report on new, unpublished work.
  • Extended abstracts are limited to a 2-page length (not including references) and can report on previously published work or preliminary results.
(The page length maximum is only for the body of the paper and does not include references).

Please see the author guidelines below for detailed instructions and manuscript templates.

All submissions will undergo a detailed peer review process. Full papers will be reviewed for timeliness, novelty, scientific quality, sound methodology and use of appropriate analysis techniques. Abstracts will be reviewed for timeliness, novelty, and quality.

Both papers and extended abstracts will be considered for oral or poster presentation, without distinction between full papers and extended abstracts.

Accepted papers and extended abstracts will be published by MIT Press as open-access electronic proceedings.

Author Guidelines

Each submission will be reviewed in a double blind review process. To this end, the following information is very important: submissions should NOT contain any element that could reveal the identity of the authors (author names, affiliations and acknowledgments). Furthermore, any reference to any of the author’s own work should be made as if the work belonged to someone else.

We encourage the use of LaTeX for the production of papers. LaTeX and Microsoft Word templates are available here:

Note that for both submission types you will need a text-only abstract, which will be displayed in the programme and on the web after publication. Note that in addition to the pdf you will need this text abstract when you upload your submission (250 words max, shorter preferred).
The reviewing process is double-blind, meaning that submissions have to be edited to remove authors’ names.
The following formatting instructions apply to the final version of your manuscript, if it is accepted for publication:

  • One single PDF, no additional file.
  • PDF length <= 8 pages for full papers, <= 2 pages for extended abstracts. (The page length maximum is only for the body of the paper and does not include citations).
  • PDF size < 5 Mb.
  • All pages sized consistently at 8.5 x 11 (US letter format).
  • No visible crop marks.
  • Color figures are possible. Images at *no greater* than 300 dpi, scaled at 100%.
  • Embedded open type fonts only.
  • All layers flattened.
  • All desired links active in the files: This can be done easily with LaTeX. To automatically turn all your internal references (citations, figures, equations, sections…) into internal hyperlinks in the PDF, add \usepackage{hyperref} in the preamble of your .tex file. If you get an error (“Paragraph ended before \Hy@setref@link was complete”) upon compilation, remove the .aux files and try to compile again, this should fix the problem. To insert links pointing outside the document, use \url{http://theurlyouwanttoinsert}. It will show the URL using a mono-spaced font and, if readers click on it in the PDF, their browser will be opened pointing at it.

Submission Process

Each submission should be uploaded as a single file, in PDF format only, to the Easy Chair system. You will need to create an Easy Chair account if you do not have one yet.

Please enter appropriate keywords for your submission when prompted to help us organise the conference programme. You must also specify whether your submission is a full paper or an extended abstract.

ALIFE 2023 will also include a number of special sessions. If you are submitting to one, you will be given the opportunity to select it during the submission process on Easychair. The submission and review process for special sessions will follow the same guidelines as the main conference.

In addition, at ALIFE 2023 we will host several workshops. Workshop submissions, when available, will be managed separately from the main conference, with different deadlines and review processes. To submit a paper to a workshop, please follow the link to the respective website, which will be listed on the workshops page upon finalisation of the workshops list.

NOTE: At least one author of every accepted paper or poster must be registered, or the paper/poster will be withdrawn. ALIFE 2023 will be a hybrid conference and will provide the necessary infrastructure for video presentations, and virtual participation.

Workshops & Tutorial

Deadline: 31 January 6 February (extended), 2023
CLOSED

The ALife2023 Organizing Committee invites proposals for Workshops and Tutorial to be held in conjunction with ALIFE 2023 conference, which will be held in Sapporo (Japan), 24-28 July 2023.

We especially encourage proposals that relate to the theme of ALIFE 2023:
Ghost in the machine

Submission of Workshops and Tutorial Proposals will be open soon.
We will receive applications until 31 January 6 February (extended), 2023.
The notification of acceptance will be given by 13 Feburary 20 February, 2023.

Workshop Proposals

The ALIFE 2023 workshops are intended to be forums to present and discuss new approaches, visions, or critical reflections within a research area. They provide an excellent opportunity to meet people with similar interests, to be exposed to cutting-edge research and to exchange ideas in an informal setting. The organizers of an accepted workshop are responsible for its coordination and its publicity (e.g., for sending out call for papers/abstracts), for collecting and reviewing the papers/abstracts, and for maintaining a website providing a list of accepted talks. Workshops are open to all interested conference participants, unless specifically justified otherwise in the application. Workshops can allocate either one or two 1.5 hour time slots.

If accepted, ALIFE will provide the onsite and online logistics (seminar rooms, projectors, coffee breaks, zoom) and links from the main conference website. All other organizational issues — including separate review process and proceedings publication, if any — are taken care of by the workshop chairs. Therefore, any workshop-specific requests from participants should be exclusively addressed to them, not to the ALIFE committee. The internal organization of the satellite workshops and tutorials (website, paper submission, invited talks, proceedings, all deadlines except registration) is entirely left up to their respective organizers. Participation in workshops requires conference registration.

Tutorial Proposals

ALIFE 2023 tutorials will be presented by domain experts to cover current topics relevant to artificial life researchers and practitioners, such as introduction to state-of-the-art methods and software. Each tutorial slot will be 1.5 hours long. We encourage tutorial organizers to maintain a website that collects tutorial, demos and interactive material.

As for Tutorials, ALIFE will provide the onsite and online logistics (seminar rooms, projectors, coffee breaks, zoom) and links from the main conference website. All other organizational issues are taken care of by the tutorial chairs. Therefore, any tutorial-specific requests from participants should be exclusively addressed to them, not to the ALIFE committee. Participation in tutorials requires conference registration.

Submission Process

Every workshop or tutorial proposal should include:

  1. title of the workshop or tutorial
  2. name(s) and affiliation(s) of the organiser(s) with contact details
  3. a short CV of the main organiser
  4. a brief description (about 300 words) of the workshop or tutorial
  5. potential target participants and audience and roughly approximated number of participants each on-site and online

Only for workshops:

  1. type of workshop (contributed talks, invited talks, interactive session, panel discussion, etc.)
  2. an indication whether the workshop should run for one or two 1.5 hour slots
  3. whether you have a plan for preparing online (or pdf) proceedings or abstract booklets of the workshop or not

If you are interested in organising a workshop or tutorial, please fill out the form on each page.

Special Sessions

Deadline: 12 December, 2022

CLOSED
The ALife2023 Organizing Committee invites proposals for Special Sessions to be held in conjunction with ALIFE 2023 conference, which will be held in Sapporo (Japan), 24-28 July 2023.

We especially encourage proposals that relate to the theme of ALIFE 2023:
Ghost in the machine

We will receive applications until 12 December, 2022.
The notification of acceptance will be given by 19 22 December, 2022.

SPECIAL SESSIONS

Special Sessions are part of the conference main program. They are dedicated to both established and emerging core concepts of the ALife agenda. Special sessions provide an excellent opportunity for researchers in the ALife community to shape parts of the conference programme by attracting high quality submissions, organizing session content and selecting session chairs.

Contributions to special sessions undergo the same peer review process as other submissions to the conference and will be included in the conference proceedings. There is no limit on the number of time slots allocated to a special session and their duration will instead be determined by the number of allocated contributions. Special sessions that do not attract a sufficient number of contributions will not take place.

Submission Process

Every special session proposal should include:

  1. title of the special session
  2. name(s) and affiliation(s) of the organiser(s) with contact details
  3. a short CV of the organiser(s)
  4. why your session theme deserves special attention from the ALife community (about 150 words)
  5. what you propose to do to support the session, such as advertising it or organising (about 150 words)

CLOSED

All proposals must be sent until 12 December, 2022.
